You Had Me at……Good For You Cocktails!

One of the famous lines in Jerry Maquire was when Dorothy (Renee Zellweger) said “You had me at Hello”. The same effect happened to me at the check out line. Woman’s World magazine had large headlines across the front but I couldn’t have told you what any of them were if my life depended on it. What I did notice immediately was…. “Good For You Cocktails!”. They were featuring “citrus coolers that heal, protect and detox.” Now, it’s not like we really need an excuse to have a cocktail however……… they had me.

The story featured three drinks from mixologist Lesley Jacobs Solmonson, author of The 12 Bottle Bar. We happened to have all the ingredients for the Vanilla Grapefruit Cocktail that claims to “baby my bones” without having to make a trip back to the grocery store. (Always a plus.) Good For You Ingredients

It was super easy to make if you don’t mind working for fresh grapefruit juice. Totally worth the effort. And I would definitely give it the rating of: Yes Sir, I’ll Have Another. However, our drink definitely did not look like their photo. Perhaps it was the Florida grapefruit we used instead of the kinds they get to test drinks in the publishing offices in New York??? Or maybe, and more likely, we used more vanilla vodka than the recipe called for. I have always loved vanilla vodka. My favorite is Stoli. Definitely not Absolut Vanilla – or anything Absolut for that matter but that’s another story for another time.

The photo on the left is from the magazine. The photo on the right is ours.

Side By Side

To make one:

– 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
– 1 tsp. lemon zest
– 2 tbs. sugar
– 1/2 oz lemon juice
– 1 1/2 oz vanilla vodka (Stoli is our recommendation but at the time we had Smirnoff and it was delicious.)

Wet the rim of the glass with half cut grapefruit.

On plate, mix lemon zest and sugar. Rim the cocktail glass with the mixture and put a little ice in the glass. Set aside.

Pour grapefruit juice, lemon juice and vodka into a shaker filled with ice. Shake. Pour into glass.

They claim that you can use 1/8 tsp. of vanilla extract to your shaker if you don’t have vanilla vodka. We should try that and compare but since I’m such a fan of vanilla vodka, we would never not have it in our house. If any of you try it with the extract let us know how it tastes.

I detest grapefruit. Do you think it would have the same effect if you used any type of citrus? Maybe blood oranges?

Detest Grapefruit? That’s crazy talk! Maybe you haven’t experienced FLORIDA Grapefruit. 🙂 First I would recommend you trying this drink as is…. Vanilla Vodka makes everything taste great. With that being said, I bet any citrus would work. Orange juice would probably taste like a Creamsicle. Yum! We will test it out in the future and let you know. Unless you try first…… Cheers!
