Your Guide to Drinking with Our Golden Oscar Buddy

Of the nine films that were nominated for Best Picture this year, we can say two things.
First: We actually saw seven of them. (Thanks to a director friend who will remain nameless.)
Second: La La Land sucked.

But, you don’t read our posts to hear movie reviews. You’re here for the drinks and, hopefully, a laugh or two if we do our job right. However, avoid seeing the “Thank god not nominated” Martin Scorsese’s Silence at all costs. You will thank us for that advice. Trust us.

And, of the seven films the we saw, most of them would drive you to drink (as they did us, which was a plus).  Many were depressing and heavy. Not saying they were bad. Lion, Hidden Figures and Fences were three of the best movies of all time. Put them right up there on the list with Rocky, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Princess Bride.

So, here’s our drink recommendations to go along with the seven Oscar nominated films we saw.

Arrival

A movie about aliens could only call for an “Alien Secretion” served in a collins glass.
Thanks to Difford’s Guide for this recipe.
You’ll need vodka, melon liqueur, coconut liqueur and fresh pressed pineapple juice.
They don’t want anyone copying the recipe, so go to their website to find it:

Fences

In the film, Rose tells Troy he’s going to drink himself to death, as he is drinking out of a bottle of gin … not a glass. Not mixed with anything. Just straight gin out of a bottle. So hurry and get the gin bottles out.  There are plenty of great gin choices out there.

Hidden Figures

This movie took place in the early 60s. It’s about seriously smart women. It’s about celebrating Girl Power. They’ve already won a bunch of well-deserved awards. Hope that continues. Let’s bring out the champagne now!

La La Land

Just drink. Anything. And heavily. And hope that you fall asleep and have a good nap. The first 15 minutes was great, but that leaves 113 minutes we can’t get back. Sorry Ryan, you just didn’t do it for us.

Lion

This beautiful tale was about a lost boy from India.  Try this recipe for a Tamarind Margarita.

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce triple sec
  • 2 ounces lime juice
  • 0.4 ounces orange juice
  • 0.4 ounces simple syrup
  • 0.2 ounces tamarind paste

Makes one cocktail
Shake tamarind paste with tequila and triple sec until dissolved. Add remaining ingredients. Shake well and pour into a salt-rimmed double rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.
Let us know how it turns out since we didn’t bother to try and find tamarind paste in time to post this story! Photo Credit: Liquor.com

Manchester by the Sea

Set in Boston, it would be apropo to drink a Boston themed cocktail. There are plenty to choose from starting with a Boston Sidecar to a Boston Cocktail. We tried the latter, since we had gin in the house and it was super easy to make.

  • 1 1/2 ounces London dry gin
  • 1 1/2 ounce apricot brandy
  • 1/4 ounce grenadine
  • lemon juice from 1/2 a lemon

Makes one cocktail
Pour the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake. Strain. Drink.

Moonlight

Set in Miami and involved the selling of dope (among other things). You might want to try one of the cannabis drinks out there in the market place. We won’t. But here’s a link to 10 you apparently “Must Try”: http://herb.co/2015/12/04/10-cannabis-drinks-you-must-try/

The 89th Academy Awards ceremony is Feb. 26th on ABC. Good luck to all the nominees. Even you, Ryan.

Cheers!

These look like fun! Although I must admit I have never seen any of these movies – I guess this is a good reason to check some out!
