A Twist on Jager

One of the best things about being the Cocktail Couple is people always know what to get us for presents. You can never go wrong with a bottle of booze. We especially like the fancy vodka (thanks Chapman) and extra large bottle of Bulleit (thanks Randy & Cindy).

And while we might have promised to save them for when you visit, we lied.

And then there are those that got a little creative (thanks Zeiglers).

We weren’t exactly sure what to do with this bottle of Hunter’s Herbal Spirit. It came from a store called Vom Fass, so we gave them a call. The store said to drink it in a cordial glass straight as an Aperitif (before dinner). He claimed it was reminisce of Jagermeister. According to their website, it is a traditional German digestif.

We figured out where Vom Fass came up with the name for this product. Curt Mast, the original distiller of Jägermeister and son of the founder Wilhelm, was an enthusiastic hunter. The name when literally translated means “master of hunters”. It is a title for a high-ranking official in charge of matters related to hunting. Don’t you just love Wikipedia?

Not being Jägermeister fans, we were hesitant to drink this Hunter’s Herbal Spirit straight. But when it Rome we went for it. We had to improvise with Apertif glasses standing in for cordial glasses. (Apparently another glass style to add to our wish list.)

Overall, the flavor was definitely a sweeter version of Jager. But because we were sipping in 1920s crystal, it didn’t scream SHOTS or recall any unpleasant college memories. In the right frame of mind (think fancy dinner party), these would be impressive to serve.

We also tried mixing it with ice and pineapple juice. Not worth it, don’t bother.

Vom Fass has many other spirits.  They let you pop in and have tastings. We can’t wait to get into their whiskey and ryes!

Cheers!

Thanks so much for the mention of our Hunter’s Herbal Liqueur. Your blog makes me want to research the history of Hunter’s Herbal. It also makes me want to shop for antique crystal glasses. BTW- we use port glasses, grappa tulips, grappa flutes, and 4oz stemmed glasses to serve cordials and they all tend to work very well. Look forward to you both exploring our little shop of deliciousness.
